People often say that passion and purpose are what fuel your business. However, what is it that fuels your passion and purpose? Contrary to popular belief, self-confidence is among one of the top answers, yet its how to is the least talked about. I, for one, can share many stories of how low self-confidence was crippling me and starting my business, but I don’t want that to be the case for you.

That’s why I think it’s important that we talk about how self-confidence is under rated when it comes to your passion and purpose. We’ll look at how important it is and practical ways to build your confidence so that you, too, can experience another level of business success.

The Roots of Self-Confidence

In a nutshell, self-confidence is linked to the attitude you have about your skills and abilites. It’s even more intertwined with being able to accept, trust, and have control in your life. Oftentimes people know their strengths and weaknesses yet the hiccups come when it’s time to use those to set realistic expectations and goals, as well as communicate assertively, or handle criticism.

Many people rarely realize that they are operating from a position of low self-confidence which is linked to self-doubt, being passive submissive, or not able to trust others — sound familiar? Instead of understanding how to work on self-confidence, it’s usually covered up by overworking, changing businesses and/or jobs frequently, or even overachievement.

If you believe you’ve been operating out of low self-confidence, don’t worry — not all is lost. Here are some practical, yet powerful, ways to begin working on your self-confidence and truly fuel your passion and purpose.

5 Ways to Build Self-Confidence

Make mistakes and be willing to learn from them.

A big matter of fact is you will make mistakes. The mistake itself isn’t always the problem, more than how you react to it. Begin to get comfortable with seeing your mistakes as opportunities to learn more about yourself. They are indicators that something could possibly use a little tweaking.

Create an elevator speech for your business.

Truth be told, not everyone is an extrovert with the perfect public speaking skills. One of the best things I could do to build my confidence — specially when talking about my business — was to practice. There is absolutely no shame in creating a short one-minute introduction that talks about who you are and what your business in about. Once you’ve got something crafted, get in the mirror and practice, practice, practice! Before you know it, you’ll be super confident and ready to chat to other people about it.

Don’t question yourself.

One of the quickest ways to lower your self-confidence is to second-guess yourself. Of course getting to the root of why you’re questioning yourself may take some time, but as you navigate your confidence-boosting journey, you can start minimizing that stinking thinking by not questioning yourself. Establishing your why, vision, and mission and these will keep you standing firm in knowing why you do what you do.

Remember your purpose.

Think about why you started your business for a moment. Somewhere connected to your why is your purpose… the very calling that you are answering because you know it’s something that you must do. If thinking about those thoughts alone don’t give you some sort of spark or jolt then perhaps you may want to revisit what you’re doing to make sure it’s in fact what you should be doing.

Make your vision visible.

This is typically done with something equivalent to a dream or vision board. Creating these boards have done wonders for myself and many other women in business. Find pictures, words, phrases, or anything that represents your passion and purpose and put them on a board. These items should speak to you and fuel your mission and business. Refer to it often and update it accordingly.

Overall, never underestimate the relation between self-confidence and your passion and purpose. It’s time to say no to letting a lack of self-confidence keep you from reaching your full potential. The imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and negative self-talk can no longer reside as part of your mindset. Take one step at a time and slowly but surely you’ll see your fears and limiting beliefs lose their power! I’m cheering for you — you got this!
